About Our Name
Our name, Friends of Music Society, was carefully chosen to feature the various ensembles in terms of their members' strengths and abilities, rather than their illness.
When exposed to a performance by one of our ensembles, the public first encounters functionality not dysfunction, which tends to be the stereotypical image of the mentally ill.

Mandate
The mandate of the Friends of Music Society is one of public education, rehabilitation, socialization and creative employment strategies for persons with a mental illness.
Our music programs strive for the following goals:
- To offer musicians with a mental illness an opportunity to participate in a supportive musical environment.
- To maintain a successful partnership between members with a mental illness and those without.
- To have fun enjoying music and socializing with other members.
- To perform for the purpose of educating the public about mental illness.
